The Diabetes Book was previously published as "Living on a Tightrope Coping with Diabetes" ******************************************************************************************************************* Hall of Famer Ron Santo was a diabetic who starred for the Chicago Cubs in the 1960’s. These were the dark ages of diabetes care, and Santo struggled with his disease in secret. His amazing story illustrates the unique problems of living with diabetes and helps show the incredible progress that’s been made in treating it since then. One thing hasn’t changed old wives tales and incorrect common “knowledge” are so rampant that millions of people believe things that simply aren’t true. This includes many diabetics and it’s even worse among the general public. This can result in genuine fear, a naïve disregard for its seriousness, or anything in between. The Diabetes Book is easily readable and uses compelling real-life stories to explain practical realities to diabetics, those who love them, and those who worry about it. It inspires everyone – diabetic or not – to pursue strong, healthy lives.

Back in the mid 70's, I began my teaching career and I clearly remember a fifth grader that was suddenly diagnosed with Diabetes. For the parents, it was devastating. For the 10 year old fifth grader, it was scary. For me as a 25 year old teacher, it was very challenging and something I was not prepared for. I really thought this young lady was at risk and I always worried about her. I had no understandings of the consequences and the effect it would have on her as well as those that interacted with her. Suddenly, I had to make sure our snacks were appropriate and I was prepared for any sudden changes. Since I taught in a three room school house with no school nurse, I was the one that had to monitor everything and make sure the environment was safe for her. I wish back in the day as a young innocent teacher that I had Galaska's book to give me a quick and easy to read overview about Diabetes and the effects it has on so many.
The style of this book is for people that want to learn about Diabetes in a clear and concise manner that is enjoyable, easy to read and accurate.
As I am now a very seasoned educator, I applaud Galaska for creating a book that is so beneficial to folks of all ages to learn about Diabetes and how it impacts the lives of so many with and without the disease.

Chet Galaska's The Diabetes Book What Everyone Should Know reflects the inquisitive, thoughtful mind of the author and his thirst to communicate with the reader. He is successful in doing so. He has a keen knack to know your questions ... even the ones you have yet to ask yourself. And, he answers them in an open, practical 'just let me share with you what I've experienced and learned' kind of way. He demonstrates that he cares and wants to make a difference in improving the quality of life of those who face the daily challenges of diabetes. Read this book and you will quite likely be a part of the realization of his goal.
Very well written, lots of good tips and information, for diabetics and people around them. I doesn't try to make you do things, it shows you something to try, that may help you, since all people are different.
"The Diabetes Book" is a gem. I have read about this disease in the past and never came away with clearer or more helpful information.
The author, Chet Galaska, a Type I diabetic, educates about this complex disease in a clear, concise, nonjudgmental and very down to earth way. From an interesting exploration of the history of diabetes and its treatment (sharpening needles at home!) to insights into latest research, the author's positive attitude calms fears and answers the questions of patients, relatives and friends. Readers will find direction, inspiration and the courage to begin to take control of their own illness and/or provide support to others
The Diabetes Book What Everyone Should Know is a superb treatise on diabetes. I suspect even doctors will learn something from this book. It clearly outlines the need for diabetics to keep their blood sugar in constant balance. If you think you may have diabetes or are a pre-diabetic or have a family member who is diabetic this book is for you . I particularly enjoyed the chapter on "Untrue Common Knowledge" in which the author puts to rest the notion that sugar in the diet is in and of itself bad. What is bad
is the failure to control one's blood sugar level. This book is w0rth every penny and if it helps you avoid diabetes or control it if you have it, its value is incalculable.
I found this book an easy read and a good introduction to diabetes for any person wishing to know more about the problem and it two types which are totally unrelated but involve the bodies consumption of glucose or should I say the inability to consume it.
I had an uncle who passed away this year and from what I know It was related to diabetes and how his sugar levels were very high at the time of his death. After reading "The Diabetes Book," I truly think if my uncle had read this book and was aware of the ins/outs of how to relate to and monitor his blood glucose levels he would have had a better chance for survival. For me (a non-diabetic), this is a great beginners/intermediate source of information on how one deals with everyday diabetic issues and also how one can better understand the severity of how a friend or loved one copes with diabetes..............Great read, short and right to the point.
This book is a great resource for non-diabetics that want to quickly and easily understand the condition. It's concise, very well-written, and enjoyable. It tackles diabetes in a very positive and honest way.

This book contains many key points that help de-mystify the disease. For instance, it was a surprise to me that for a diabetic, knowing carb loading in a meal is significantly more important than the actual sugar content of the meal. I used to think reducing sugar automatically helped them. A piece of pie or cake is not poison after all.

I also really enjoyed the chapter "Dear Friends and Relatives…A Chapter to Share with Others." Understanding the complexity of the disease, what the symptoms are, and things I can do to help (as well as understanding that they can manage their own disease and don't always need my help) has been invaluable.

I strongly encourage anyone who has a diabetic friend or family member to take a few minutes and read this book. Basic knowledge about diabetes goes a long way!
